I think in respect to steeryotypes, the author was trying to show that girls weren't just good for cooking/cleaning, etc etc, but could actually work.
Also, I think she was trying to show us about the 1800's and slaves - that a white girl and a black man can not be friends, but agaisnt the stereotype, they became friends.
It was basically a story of trust, friendship, loyalty and overcoing sterotypes.
And, treating girls like breakable fancy china is stupid.
It is easy to see the error in those stereotypes from the novel as today we live in a more enlightened society. What stereotypes within today's world might we be criticised for today by a more enlighten future society? in other words what do we need to change?
Hmmm..... I will have to get back to you on that... we already have Title 9 but there is still the lingering sterotype of the whole boys-are-better/stronger-athletes-than-girls.....
The stereotype people ARE GOING to be ashamed of is still racism. When you see a Middle Eastern man in an airport, many people think terrorist. In Arizona, people can be stopped just for LOOKING like illegal immigrants.

I believe that the author was teaching us to follow our heart and do whatever we wanted to be like a sailor

I believe that the author was teaching us to never give up on what we wanted to be, and never leave behind or abandon your golden friends.

I Believe it was follow your heart and choose wisely.
what was the message about stereotyping?
what is stereotyping?
I know what a stereotype is but what do you mean.
That girls musn't do men's work because that is unnatural, unusual, and innapropriate.
