Building Characters People Care About

Roots Test tomorrow - Do you know these 10 roots and a couple of words that go with each one?

RF Character - Make sure you could take extensively about the 'backstory' of your main character for your realistic fiction story.

Do you wish to retake the Sentence Clauses test?
Complete –IXL - 10th Grade M1 and M2  AND the practice exercise links on my blog from last week. You will take the test again on the next Blue Day 2 if you can provide evidence that you have done this additional practice.

No new H/W - READ!

Read how effectively Jack paints a picture with words of the setting for his story. Well done Jack.

The boys bathroom was all white with a square tile pattern.  Wet globs of toilet paper stuck to the ceiling as if it were super glued.  White walls paint was coming off showing the grey concrete.  Three of the sinks were clogged with paper towels and the fourth one was chipped.  The mirror above the sink had graffiti on it.  A picture of middle pointing up and words below that saying “DROP DEAD!” On a stall door someone wrote with a pencil “H+E” with a huge heart surrounding it. The toilets were clogged and unflushed letting the sick aroma filled the air.  I hated it here I mean couldn’t we just use another bathroom. The only actual color in the place was a puddle of blood on the floor and in the center a broken tooth.  I would have let him go if Jake weren't there.  Anthony kept on thrashing and elbowing me in the shoulder.  It was really uncomfortable and annoying.  Plus his blood kept on dripping on my shoe.  Like a waterfall.

Building Character Profiles & Delayed Adjectives

Great work today thinking about Jake Moon's online footprint. For tomorrow, you will need to do this for you own RF character. Be thinking about the digital footprint you will create for your own character.

Write a realistic fiction scene...

  • Write another realistic fiction scene that hints at a social issue for a different story. Use the ideas for stories that you had from Friday's class. The list of videos are still on my blog below. Students choose one of these ideas and write a scene. Your scene should incorporate 'some' of the advanced moves we have been modeling from  the Graduation of Jake Moon such as:
    • using lists for specificity
    • slow motion scene
    • rehearsing a scene
    • "count up and count down" technique
    • figurative language
    • continuum to show transition
    • framing a scene - position, location, movement, and direction
    • "down the garden path" technique
Any other craft moves you know

H/W -
Spend 15 mins on your RF scene from today's class.

Poscars... "O Captain My Captain..."

Congratulations on your excellent performances today in the Poscars....

A Closing Thought...
In the movie, Dead Poet's Society, Robin Williams challenged his students "...to dare to be different, to strive to find their own voices, to dare to strike out and find new ground..." For this, he was fired from his job.... This last scene shows how his students showed that they would not forget his lesson and embrace life as he had taught them. "...the powerful play of life goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will YOUR verse be?"

Hopefully, you will take what you have learned in poetry and follow the teachings of Robin Williams  Carpe Diem
