Poetry - Showing not Telling

You next poem will be a figurative/sensory narrative poem that retells a major world event in 'showing not telling' language. Monday's H/W will be to select that event.

Use your social studies textbook to select a major event of the 19th, 20th or 21st Century.   More adventurous students can choose to select a topic from the links below.
http://www.awesomestories.com/featured-stories
http://history1900s.about.com/od/famouscrimesscandals/u/events.htm

All you need for Tuesday's class is the name of the event and a print out of the text you will use for your poem. see below
e.g.The Titanic Sinks!

The RMS Titanic, also known as the Unsinkable Ship, set sail on her maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. It was leaving Southampton, England to reach New York. This ship was the biggest ship ever and was created by White Star Lines and was constructed by Harland & Wolff. On April 14 a terrible disaster happened. The Titanic hit an iceburg. It was 11:40pm when she grazed the side of the iceburg. Three hours later it sank. Over 1,500 people died on that fatal night. The captain, Edward J. Smith ignored warnings from other ships about iceburg sightings. They tried to turn the ship so it would not hit the iceburg. They turned but not enough. The ship started to sink at bow, making the passangers move to the stern. She split in two and sank bringing everyone in the water down too. Many froze in the -28 degrees Fahrenheit water. About 706 people survived, living to tell this tragic tale.

Remember
The easiest way to do this is to just select a story from your Social Studies Textbook

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
    {VERSE 1}
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you; you answer quite slowly,
    A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
    Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
    And she's gone.

    {CHORUS}
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
    Ah... Ah...

    {VERSE 2}
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain,
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
    That grow so incredibly high.

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
    Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
    And you're gone.

    {CHORUS}

Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties.
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
    The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds “The Beatles” is a song that refers to a young girl’s gorgeous characteristics. The author talks about Lucy being in the sky with diamonds. The writer states “The girl with kaleidoscope eyes”, and in my opinion the line refers to the diamonds. The diamonds are possibly signifying that Lucy’s eyes are beautiful. Furthermore, a variety of lines show that the girl doesn’t know Lucy. The writer scribbles “Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain” which describes that someone is not with her, but following Lucy. Additionally, a couple of lines suggest that Lucy knew that the figure was following her. The phrases “Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes” shows that Lucy had to know who the person was if she showed up at the exact place. The line shows that Lucy is clever if Lucy knows that like someone is following her. To reiterate, Lucy is a girl that provides flawless characteristics like a diamond, and she is very intelligent. “The girl with kaleidoscope eyes”.

  29. In My Life

    There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
    Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one that compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
But in my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

The long and winding road that leads to your door,
Will never disappear, I've seen that road before
It always leads me here, lead me to your door.

The wild and windy night that the rain washed away,
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way.

Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried,
Anyway you've always known the many ways I've tried, but
Still they lead me back to the long, winding road,

You left me waiting here a long, long time ago.
Don't leave me standing here, lead me to your door.
    Da da, da da

    My Interpretation

    “Lead me to your door”
The lyrics ‘ the long winding road’ by the Beetles is
a powerful song that expresses a feeling a person has for a girl and the person wants to know more about her life and be a part of it. I can infer this because a multitude of times, a long, winding road comes across as a person’s life’s story. I predict that this man had known this girl for quite a while and not realized that he had feelings for the girl, and I can infer this because in a passage it expresses it ‘The wild and windy night that the rain washed away,
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way.’ I strongly state that I predict the girl doesn’t like him back, because it

    Blind Eyes
Streets bustle and hustle like army camps
    Rickety buildings seem sturdy enough
Water drips down from the disappearing icicles
Just another molecule in a large ball

Light but dark pounds the street
Cracks appear in souls and grounds
Slowly the molecule is split throughout
Anchorage is rapidly losing the title bout

    Growling stones come crashing down
The clouds rumble like thunder now
    Hopping down cliffs like bunnies
The rocks are not so sunny

Silence is heard throughout the city
Alaska is now not so pretty
Dreams are broken in an instant
The token to happiness is suddenly gone

    John F. Kennedy Assassination

    Small earthquakes marching behind,
    Smoke floating out in line.
    Constant screaming with engines running,
    Fast motors, but no sprinting.

A variety of people yelling with joy,
Very breakable, and not a small toy.
    Numerous citizens thinking they’re safe
A loud “BANG”, yet not a small chafe.

Three more ”BOOMS”, all hitting their targets,
All of the nation heard, even the markets.
Everybody worried that they would be the victims,
Hoping that the assassin would go to prison.

    Tears streaming down everyone’s face,
All the president wanted to do was help the human race.
Too much chaos was happening everywhere,
The man’s family was in so much despair.

    Heading into history
    Will Gardner

    May 6, 1937
A helium structure heading towards history
    Anxiety burned throughout the air
The hustle and bustle of New Jersey surrounded the town

    Blue discharges started it all
    Gas leaked like rainfall
A “mushroom” smacked the unsuspecting clouds
As screams, cries, and shouts showered the ground

“Its burst into flames” Herbert Morrison wailed
“Get out of the way, please” Herbert quickly exhaled
Metal candlesticks poured down with a whoosh
When the “Titanic of the sky” descended with its final tries

The smell of soot hit the city folk
As the taste of pity rose in their throats
“Oh the humanity” came from above
When the “Led balloon” came down like a sad grey dove

a leader of civil rights marcked with hope
unaware of the future in which people would cope
    the blazing sun died down
twinkling light appered in the town
he led people in deshaveled clothes
dow the trash filled alleys marching with his head held high
the noble peace prize winner drove back to town
this is where he would meet his end
for others in was a time of less sin
the day was april 4 1968
out on the cement balcony he went
    but it was to late
    a shot rang out
    he dropped to the floor
his times of troubles would be no more
