For this Friday's Figurative Language Test you should be able to understand, identify, and recreate these types of figurative language:
Simile Metaphor Personification Repetition Alliteration Hyperbole Onomatopoeia

Ignore any out  of date links or terminology that we haven't covered
Do this practice test first. Aim to score 27/29. (ignore the first question) If you can do that, you are fine for the test. Spend time working through the exercises below then retake the practice test Wed. night. Did your score improve?

  6. idiom - is just a well known word/phrase that has a different literal meaning
    e.g. he's got a chip a on his shoulders or it was a piece of cake...

    we all know that when we say it is a 'piece of cake' we really mean... it was easy...
    most idioms are like this...

    next time you come up against a word you don't know.. what should you do instead of saying "i don't know that"?

  7. for Mr.Buxton's homework tonight we should do the grammar review/ northeast thing, the poem on the northeast we started today in class, the Northeast test studying, and two pages in the packet, correct?

    the gramer booklet is due next tuesday. I don't thing we are suppost to do the poem. We do it in class. About the booklet thing, you can do all of it, but the whole thing is due next tuesday.

  14. for the figurative/ literal language test, I understand all the components except I still don't quite get what a metaphor is. Could somebody please explain it to me. (I did look it up online, but it doesn't seem like anything we've learned)

  16. Maddie, a metaphore is a figure of speech in which things are compared by stating that one thing IS another

    Ex. the clouds are cotton balls in the sky
    look at the first websites he posted that gives the defenetion and examples thats where i got it off of

    Mr. B said idom will be on the test but you don't really have to know it and it's definitions like the other words such as onopopia, metafor, etc...

    Also do we have to know the definitions word for word on the test+ Do we have to work on that poem he assined us up with a different person+ when do we have to have that poem memorized by again?

  23. Sarah- u need to know the general meanings of the words, u don't have to work on the poem, and students 1-5 present poem on Mon. 6-10 on tues. ect.

    literal means exactly what it says while figuartive you have to " decode" it to get the real, deeper meaning
