Movie Trailer
work on the writing portion for two boxes for your movie trailer. This is approx. oneparagraph per box. Tomorrow you will start collecting digital resources for your movie. Be thinking about how you will 'show' your plot with images.

Think about what made this an engaging trailer.
http://youtu.be/fwavA7RIVpQ What will you be able to do to make yours interesting?

Tomorrow's Book club discussion will be shorter than normal. All you need to have done is read thes section you were assigned and bring a discussion statement/opinion. e.g. The use of typical, uncreative archetpyes in this novel makes the story too predictable.

  31. Dear Queen Victoria,

I, Sir Stamford Raffles, have come to the realization that there are multiple dilemmas facing us in the creation of our new settlement. Thank you for bestowing the Crown colony name upon us; unfortunately, it has attracted many mafias and gangs. In my opinion, the government must act by putting more money into the police fund to counter these criminal elements. As result our colony will be more prosperous.

Currently, merchants are putting pressure on the government for additional medical care, education, and employment. If we do not get the additional medical aid, smallpox and cholera will overrun Singapore. We already need to quarantine many sick citizens. Additionally, sadly I am getting complaints about not all schools being treated equally in terms of quality education. I think that the government should put some effort into equal rights and employment as that will make the country a much more civilized place with much more trade. Luckily more jobs are becoming available and the economy is growing.

Another realization is that members are taking part in robberies and gang fights. There are all ready two groups, the coolies and the Laborers. The reason why they are doing this is because the Chinese are being discriminated against at the moment by Malays. The Chinese are the biggest population of Singapore. We cannot let Singapore turn into an unprosperous place. We must hold our ground and put more money into the police force as they will handle the situation.

Trade has been successful and continues to grow at a high rate. There has been a 50% increase over the past five years. The fish, rice, and other raw material trades are the most successful. The one problem is if we want Singapore to look like a safe successful country, we must treat its citizens with the appropriate human rights. The current Chief of Police, Thomas Dunman has been throwing immigrants in cells and beat them red. I firmly believe you should fire him or move him down and replace him with a more experienced officer.

    Sincerely,
    Sir Stamford Raffles

  32. Thank you, Emma, for reminding me that you need to have some positives for the letter. I would also like to remind you that this is the British as Rulers, so I'm not sure that mentioning that trade was good would be the better option. I would say what is going well in the economy that the British controlled. However, the choice is entirely yours.

  34. So is mine, Maddy. I actually printed mine on off - white paper and crumpled it up to make it look like an old document.

I can only do one paragraph because all my other slides have basically everything done.

    Dearest Queen Victoria,
Sir Charles, your humble advisor, is at your service. The report held before you shall be the most important Singapore shall ever set before your eyes. The colony crowned by the British has developed a mind of its own. The British may lose their control over the citizens of Singapore. To avert this drastic situation, the British shall have to change some of their ways of ruling. Changes that could possibly be enforced are the creation of equilibrium and the banishing of the Chinese secret societies.
Personally, I believe that discrimination should be greatly encouraged. After all, we should be treated based on where we stand in life. However, the ungrateful Asians of Singapore shall start protesting against the discrimination. If the protests begin, word will travel, and in my vision, Singapore will not be as successful as it is currently. How we can stop discrimination is simple but complicated. It will be simple to issue the laws, but it will be complicated to persuade residents of Singapore to follow them. The laws to be issued, however, cannot simply state to stop discrimination. The laws need to be specific. As an example, ‘Asians are not to have separate places in a railway than European’ would be an ideal law. Another ideal law could be that ‘No biases for British supporters will important decisions such as job placements’. In this way, we can lower the percentage of Asians that are con British.
The Chinese Secret Societies have aroused many problems. These problems may become one mega problem; therefore, we should try especially hard to eliminate most, if not all, of the Secret Societies. Some of the havoc these particular groups have cause include not paying their loans, robbing people of their goods, and generally having a negative impact on business. The Chinese Secret Societies have also been involved in riots and other violence, such as killing. Overall, the government in Singapore needs to try harder to banish as much as possible of the Chinese Secret Societies.
Even though Singapore has yet a long way to come to achieve the perfect economy, Singapore has certain achievements already. As I proudly say, the British government has been responsible for many, if not all, of them. Britain has agreed to pay for Singapore until it can fund itself. Because Singapore is receiving the money it needs to function, the trading is growing and growing. The economy is reaching higher and higher. Additionally, the British government is hiring Malay and/or Chinese speakers. Furthermore, the policeman have proper training and a great pay.
    Warmest regards,
    Sir Charles
