Mr. Buxton I don't understand where and when to put a comma in a compex sentence. Will you please help me understand.

When I watched the complex sentence video I found out where to put the comma, so you put the comma after a dependent clause not a independent clause. but i still don't understand why you don't put a comma before a subordinating cunjunction. That is what you told me in class.
