Coming Next Week

  • Writing and Performing Tall Tales
  • Punctuating Dialogue
  • Synthesizing and Paraphrasing Practice
  • West Region Activities
  • State Report Guidelines
  • Poetry Parties
There will be no H/W sheets after this week until Feb 22nd. During State Report time, you have the freedom to plan  and organize your own H/W routine. You will be given clear expectations of what needs to be completed; you will have the choice of when to do the work.  Fifth grade is about learning to become an independent thinker and worker. Now you are given the opportunity to show what you have learned!

Here is a rough draft of my poem.. please share thoughts of how to make it better
The One-Sided Mountain
By Robert Fuller

Oh, what a shame it would be,
If a mountain had only one side
All the climbers with nothing to challenge
All the goats with nowhere to hide

But what if a person were one-sided too
An awful disgrace as well
If they only enjoyed one thing
And all other interests just…fell

Maybe the key is to have many
Interests that you think are fun
For everyone knows a pack of wolves
Often hunts better than one

If one only cared about sports or school
Two important matters
Then he would spend a lifetime
Studying or striking out batters

Yes, I care about sports and school
But also faith, service, music, and kin
Pity the poor fool who cares for one thing
For he is indeed like the one sided mountain

In poems, is a line limited to a certain amount of words and can it be a question?

Ex: Little wooden trees, what would I be without you?

Would that work?

Forrester said...

What does the phrases part of the tall tales worksheet mean?

Mary Grace- There is no limit to the amount of words to a line.

~Forrester

Mary Grace Parker said...

Phrases like
The biggest
The tallest

Senses
By:Juliana Vorhoff

A crowd full of city walkers
I can see
Soothing rosemary from my mom's garden
I can smell
Fresh and zesty taste of key lime pie
I can taste
The spunky music that I dance along to
I can hear
Fuzzy, soft blankets scattered across my bed
I can feel
See, smell, taste, hear, and feel
My teacher attentively teaches us
I can see
Perfume blasted up my nostrils
I can smell
The minty freshness of toothpaste
I can taste
The incessant purr from my kitten
I can hear
Slick keys as I continue to type
I can feel
Senses are all I need

The Big Skyscraper
By Abigail Wedding

The Wedding family is like a skyscraper
With a muscle high foundation
Crafted with love, care, and education
Everlasting

The elevator travels from ground level
Guiding family to all the heights
Though sometimes it may seem its not there
The elevator is always by family’s side

The lobby welcomes newcomers
Spectacular scenery scattered about
Feeling the warmth
At home

Windows offer never-ending sight
But the skyscraper protects family
Steel, concrete, and glass provide structure
Family means family

I don't want to write this poem

I'm sitting in a chair
Waiting for my brother
I've got to write a poem
Oh no, not another
I can't think of anything topical
'cause I want to be somewhere tropical
I'm getting really bored
I'd rather be jousting with a sword
When will this ever end
I'd rather be playing with a friend
45 minutes to go
I'd rather be watching a show
The clock is slowly ticking
I want an icecream to be licking
I'm getting really tired
I wish this place is wired
I want to get out
I'd rather loudly shout
The only thing to do is write
I'd rather fly a kite
I wish i had somthing to eat
I wish someone was rubbing my feet
This room is very small
I'd even rather be shopping at the mall
If only my brother were done
I could go outside and have some fun
If only I didn't have to write this poem
Oh well, I guess I'll write it when I get home

this is my free choice poem. Is there anything
wrong with it? -alex

Little wooden trees, what would I be without you? Quite alone I would say but that is how I feel some days
Ivory branches held tall and high
Back pressed above all that towers seen eye to eye

Serenity fills their branches
Peace is drawn here like a rolling fog cloud
No siren sounds here to wake the trees
This gift from Mother Nature

A black and white world rushing by
The crushing close of thoughts twisting and turning
But then… unexpectedly… they flash away
A quiet brook trickles into my thoughts and they have fled away

I am a pirate! A witch! A cat
No one can defeat me when I am all of that!
I trip! I slide! I slip
Into the sturdy arms of a branch that holds me quick

From the hustle and bustle of every day life
This is the place I come with my feelings to pour out to the sky
You could miss it in the blink of an eye
Like a light in a room full of darkness, I come here with no rules to abide
