Comma Rules and Run-ons: Test Queries

I just don't get it...

Write down anything that confuses you related to COMMAS rules, fragments, and run-ons. Maybe you can get answers from your friends...

eg. Could you fix this sentence?
The dogs and cats played and jumped around the yard the cats made the most mess the dogs made the most noise.

I found a comma mistake on wikipedia. There shouldn't be a comma after funeral. Here it is: Mother Teresa lay in state in St Thomas, Kolkata for one week prior to her funeral, in September 1997.

Having trouble with my restate sentence. Anyone want to share their restate.-ABBY

The writing assignment's wilf is something like this (i think)
-sentance fluency
-have to follow the power plan
-must have power 0
-must have at least 1 of each of the comma rules integrated into it

there might be something else that i missed, but i think this is pretty much it.

Gauruv, you are right.

Wyatt you are wrong because, if you are trying to do coordinate adj., played and jumped are verbs, not adj, so it won't work.

Charlie its not a comma mistake you need the comma after funeral

kennedy,
I gave your homework to your brother. You have to interprate the 16 lines and make your own. At the beginning your can put a p1, a few p2s, and a few p3s. They sould explain what you think the poem means to you. Than you can include the poem. Tell me if you have any other question.
Hope you fell better.

Bennett I found out we don't have to

For our H/W for the Invictus poem, do we have to put our thoughts about it on a notecard, or do we have to write a poem of our thoughts on a notecard??

PLEASE tell me which one is right, and if they are both wrong tell what we need to do with the poem!!!!!!

:-)

mr b this is the rest of my writing Mother Teresa spent months in medical training in the Holy Family Hospital then she ventured into the slums. In 1948 she began her missionary work; a Sari replacing her traditional Loreto habit. Soon she started tending to the needs of the starving and the destitute. In 1949, some young women joined her efforts, and she started a new religious community helping the “ poorest of the poor” . Mother Teresa’s help continued until she had saved about 100,000 lives.

Later, in 1979, Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work. By the early 1970s, Mother Teresa had become an international celebrity, and almost every one in the world knew her. Her death was mourned in both secular and religious communities and it made everyone weak. After learning about Mother Teresa and how she saved all of those lives, it is reasonable to say that she was an amazing woman.

Even if we won’t leave home at 18 we can still respect the nun with a big heart. The smile fade as Mother Teresa’s life fades away.

Kennedy,
All you have to do is basicly change all the words from the real poem into your own words. when you are done with that you have to right a paragraph about what the poem means to use. if you say it is ____ than you need to support why you think it is _____ with evidence. Do you get it now??

CH said...

It's Cady.

On one of Mr. Buxton's excersises, the website said that you don't need a comma in between a series and and. Here's and example.

I like books, singing and dancing.

Is this correct or not? HELP!!!!

Unknown said...

Cady - In England (UK) the second comma is never used in a series, in the US, the comma is needed.
You will see many many commas used diffrently as the rules for different countries are different. Also, many people simply don't know how to use commas effectively... (but you guys do now, don't you?)

Here is my character sketch-

Name: Abby Carpenter Date:12-14-10
#: 2
Assignment Objective: Character Sketch

“ I don’t think of all the misery but all the beauty that still remains”-Anne Frank

Anne writes yet another diary entry before she knows she will never see her family again. Anne Frank is a girl who’s diary will live on through the ages. Anne’s childhood was a rollercoaster with an assortment of adversity being thrown at her. The year the Nazis over powered Europe, 1933, Anne’s family moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 1942, her family went into hiding in a secret room located in her father’s, Otto office building. Anne bravely stayed in hiding for two years before being betrayed. Anne’s life was arduous and lonely during World War II. Bergen Belsen concentration camp was where the Nazis sent Anne and her sister, Margot. Her family was no longer safely huddled together in a small room. She had lost the comfort of knowing that she would wake up seeing the people who loved her. Sadness crept up her spine. If Anne frank was living today she would be full of joy because her diary was published. Anne cherished her diary, Kitty, and wrote her feelings and thoughts in the light paper pages. After the war had ended, Anne Frank’s father, the only survivor in the family, went back to Amsterdam and found that Anne’s diary had been saved. She would have been very proud of her dad and happy to see that a plethora of readers have read and been inspired by her diary.

Still having trouble with my restate and closing hook.
