Week 3 Day 1

RLA
Make sure you have at least 20 ideas before you begin writing your description of  a place that is special to you.  Remember, you are not trying to just describe the place, you are talking about how this place is associated with a memory. You will describe the place in an indirect way and not directly.
e.g. Paraphrasing the line  from Thursday class- "I reached across my bed and silenced my Quartz alarm clock." (what was described here?)

Math
Play these games for 10 mins  to help practice your square number recognition

Optional
Play this Math game to practice your mutiples for 10mins

Optional
Evaluating - Remember the strategy we learned today about offer our opnions in a more constructive way. Gain a plus point if you can effectively evaluate the day when your parents ask - "How was school today?"

You need at least two categories and three pieces of evidence per category.
Use the RC RaCS strategy to evaluate your day at school. Think about categories first!

Mr. Buxton, I didn't write that line about the alarm clock. Thanks for teaching me a lot about evaluating today!!

Another thing, what time do you usually come on around, Mr.Buxton? I need to know when to check for answers to any questions i asked

when I write the draft do I have to finish the draft or do part of it?
-Rachel

Part of it is fine. Make sure what you do is the best possible.

A way to tell...

Look at your opening word of each sentence. Is it just a one or two syllable word or 3 or more syllables?

Have you started with a (or double or triple) adverb, verb, noun, adjective?

Highlight any set of three sentences. Can you perfectly draw what you wrote or are you guessing the color, size, material brand etc.

Can you find any words that describe your feelings/emotions.

Get rid of all 'YOU' and 'GOT'. Use just a few 'I' and There is/was

Are you writing about a melon or a seed... How would you know the difference?

It means more than just that Anisha. 5pm 7pm 9pm

you're starting to read between the lines anisha - what else? time of day? mood of author? etc...When you can create writing that allows your readers do read beyond the obvious, you know you are on your way.

Write until you have finished. As you grow as a writer, you'll know when that is. ...BUT as a rule of thumb -between 3-5 pararaphs or approx. one half to one full page of typed text.. Organized in paragraphs!
i'll put a video on the blog to show you how to use popplet with a partner.

We will finsih 1.8 and 1.9 Wed/thur. some math games Friday before the field trip. wow.. what does that mean?

+1 Rachel...

Time of day is probably around 6:00 in the morning. The day might be of 5:Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday,or Friday. The mood of the author might be tired, because he or she did not have enough sleep, or exited for the day.
-Anisha
P.S. For the number of paragraphs that you said, is that in total or the number we should have drafted already?

berrysweetπ said...

mr.buxton, can the place describing thing be a fictional story, but describing a real place?

berrysweetπ said...

BTW, when is the final draft of our place description due?

berrysweetπ said...

Do you know any other words for the words I or me? Thesaurus.com doesn't have any.
-Anisha
P.S. This message is for the whole class

Found a great list of synonyms for got in the word bank

'I' or 'me' puts the action on the subject and are more 'telling statements' Great writers move the action away from the subject and create more 'showing' statements

I played tennis all afternoon tennis - becomes - Chasing an annoying little yellow ball around a tennis court all afternoon felt humiliating ...(in the second sentence the reader knows the emotion of the author and probably who won the game!)...

This type of question is starting to show me that you are not working hard, but working 'smart'...You literally have to change your way of thinking about what you are trying to write. In other words… Forget trying to find synonyms for ‘I’ sentence. Just rewrite your idea completely differently. (hence – the reason for those varied sentence starters we studied last week)

Also.. try this website for thinking out of the box with words. add a word to the search box. it doesn't work with every word

P.S. can you change your screen name, so it is clear who is speaking?

Thanks Mr. Buxton!

berrysweetπ said...

smileyface was me, by the way

berrysweetπ said...

could i use the term "contemplating the" as replacement for"looking at the". This is the begging of the sentence.
