Week 5 Day 4

Complex Sentences

Watch this video and tackle the exercises below:

When trying these exercises - think about how many independent clauses (sentences) there are in the sentence. Tackle any three from the list below.

We will do ALOT more work over the year on these types of sentences. Do not worry if you do not completely understand all these questions at this time. We needed to cover the material quickly so we had a basic idea of  what types of sentences we can create. We will now spend most of the year mastering these sentence types (and more)!

Thanks for putting my work on the blog!
Emma: Please go on wall wisher as much as you can, and post any interesting headlines from the news(paper, tv, computer)

An interesting word: Gobbledegook
Even though the word gobbledegook may not seem real, gobbledegook is a real word. It means: complicated language difficult to understand- Color Oxford English Dictionary.

Everyone- Mr.B said we might film tomorrow. Some people are doing book talks tomorrow too. SL 2.6 Fri. When is the 1st current events session? Student council speeches are tomorrow too.

Good luck councilors on the speeches.

I think your Book talk was great! I liked how you did you on a book cover.
Hi Mr.B,
when I was gone, I think you talked about complex sentences.
Could you or anyone else explain it to me.

Rachel L said...

Quagmire- it means a bog or marsh.
Bog- means wet spongey area or ground. Real word! There are some weird words in english.

Jacqueline said...

Mr Buxton, is it ok if instead I make a vid at home?

Unknown said...

Yes, Jacqueline.. that's fine...

where are all these weird words coming from? Well, i can't complain if you are at least learning new vocabulary! I'm learning some words myself.

you 5 people get a plus point for consistently sharing on the the blog. That is just the people above this post!

berrysweetπ said...

Thanks everybody! I am going to look for more weird words! Interesting one, Rachel!

berrysweetπ said...

Rachel: Your creativity in your book talk was prodigious( a word meaning: amazing, stupendous, astounding, wondrous, miraculous-dictionary.com)! I would never have thought have doing a popplet! Great job!

Maddy Z said...

Rachel we only did complex sentences today. What do you mean you missed the lesson??

Maddy Z said...

Mr. Buxton and Maya- thanx for the help with putting my booktalk on my thumbdrive!!!

Anonymous said...

Great stuff Anisha and Rachel! Anisha, I liked your hook which really made me laugh with the piano and the funny breath noises. Rachel, I like the way you put in a popplet and divide them in a smart way so people could see it as a book talk. I can't wait till my book talk is on. By the way, Thanks a lot for helping us get Sammy Snakes. If we could vote who would be the Student of the Week, I'd vote for Anisha as she uses the blog so often, she has amazing writing skills, and she's really good at math. Good Job Anisha. Why don't you want to be in the Student Council? You'd be perfect Anisha

Rachel L said...

Oh, sorry Maddy. Breann got me confused she said that learning complex sentences was the day that I missed school.

berrysweetπ said...

Thanks Nakul! I am going to try for student council
next semester. Acording to me, all the fun stuff comes next term.

berrysweetπ said...

Mr.Buxton, for the movie, may I use gobbledegook as one of my advanced words?

berrysweetπ said...

What is the WILF for the narrative movie?

Anonymous said...

I think it's on apposotives Anisha not sure

Anonymous said...

Man I wish I posted something before Mr. Buxton said the plus point thing

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't everyone else post so much. It seems that Maddy, Anisha (obviously), Rachel, Alex and I mostly go on it. Either people don't like posting or they don't even go to the blog. Hmmm... Doesn't it seem that Rohan never posts anything am I right?

berrysweetπ said...

Thanks Nakul!
You really shouldn't mention people's names like how you mentioned Rohan's name. It might offend the person.

berrysweetπ said...

When I think of dependent clauses, I think: an independent clause + a subordinate. Sometimes this is true, like in the sheet Mr. Buxton gave us.

Anonymous said...

Well if it offends you Rohan I didn't mean to and sorry.

Anonymous said...

Do we have to put our name school and email?
Because I'm not sure if it's safe

Anonymous said...

Wow it's very invigorating to be outside now. It's so cold! Invigorating means cool. (temperature cool not personality cool)

Anonymous said...

I don't know if this is an issue but whenever I open into the blog, it automatically goes 3/4 the way to the bottom. Is this for everyone or just me.

berrysweetπ said...

Nakul, if you are using Safari then it is normal. I am not sure about the other web browsers.

Jacqueline said...

Thank you Mr Buxton! :D Looking forward to tommorrow! Tee hee! hehehehe

Jacqueline said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Hmmm... looking for more cool words

Anonymous said...

Ah! Heres one stupefying. It means awesome or amazing.

Rohan said...

Dont worry, Nakul, it`s okay, but you are right... I just don't like typing things up to much. Mr.Buxton, I don't want to do student counsil any more... Anisha and Become the candidate instead.

Anonymous said...

abhorrent means terrible. I think that's how it's spelt.... Yeah it's abhorrent.

Anonymous said...

berrysweetπ said...

Thanks, but no thanks Rohan. First, I don't think I can step in now as I don't have a speech, and second, I plan to only run next term.

I think next term will be to hard to handle because there's spirit week and all that so I'll take the easier job. Problem is if I get elected there are some little 4th graders who don't like me. Hope they don't embarrass me.

berrysweetπ said...

You should try for student counsel, Rohan. Don't just drop out! You might end up really liking it. At first, you might not have wanted to eat pizza, but then you turned out to really like it(if you don't really like pizza, then replace pizza with your fav. food). Don't give up until you try!

Hi Mr. Buxton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-D
6th grade is AWSOME! I've missed you SO much! Thank you for getting me prepared for middle school (now I understand why you taught me all those coplicated things!)

-Matigan S.

P.S. I never knew gobbledegook was a word! Have fun teaching this year Mr. Buxton!

berrysweetπ said...

nakul you mean sleazy not sneazy.

Anonymous said...

no I mean sneazy

berrysweetπ said...

nakul, check sleazy on anything. I checked 2 dictionaries, and guess what? It had nothing for sneazy and something for sleazy and the definition for sleazy was what you thought the definition for sneazy was! Actually make that 3 dictionaries, as when I typed in sneazy, I have to delete part of it because it keeps saying sneezy! Where did you find sneazy?
