Final Stretch

Types of Opening
1) Rhetorical Question: Is individual choice stifled across America because of mandatory school uniform policies?  (often parallel structure is used here)

2) Create a scenario:  Picture this. It's a typical Monday morning in suburbia. Two very opinionated tweens are each squabbling over a pair of Feline pants. Each is desperate to wear them at school in order to look cool.

3) Tell a SHORT anecdote:  Mary Jane Roe walked nervously down the halls of Shane Elementary. After no more that a few steps, the giggles began soon followed by a barrage of   insults. Mary Jane was wearing Wrangler jeans, and this style was simply not cool

Anybody can write an opening: The trick is CONNECTING the  opening  (hook) to your claim/thesis - see how these sentences below relate to the hooks

Example 1)  Answer the question  by referring to the claim e.g. Clearly, the is a dire need to  protect the freedoms of self expression before they become eroded.(state claim)

Example 2) Families around the country can avoid these sibling squabbles if ….(state claim)
Example 3) Sadly, this story is repeated across America. This behavior can only be changed if….(state claim)

Right now I am thinking about all of the symbolism in this movie and how it effected the decisions Mandela had to make.

I felt that while watching the movie, a lot of the speeches and things he had said to people, almost seemed to nice to be true. It sometimes seem that we forget that there are a lot of people who genuinely want to help those around them, not hurt them. Mr. Mandela was one of those people who learned how to forgive people for their actions, as well as give something back to them in return, even though they may not have been good to him.

If the whites just left the blacks alone would Mandela be such a great 'idol' to the rest of the world as he is today?

If Mandela didn't have hope would South Africa be were it is today?

If Mandela didn't tolerate the whites would they get along as well as they are now in South Africa?

My first thought when I saw the beginning of the movie, at the narration, was, "Wow, this is just going to be another boring documentation about some guy that I don't know about!" But then, after I started seeing that exactly it was that Mandela had to go through, I changed my thoughts! Now, I think, "Wow, that Mandela is really some guy! I wish I knew about him before he died!" And I hope you agree with me when I say, he is amazing!

I thought Invictus was a beautiful way to watch the progress of Mandela's goal to create a peaceful society between the whites and African American's. In the movie we clearly saw the development of Mandela's dream through a mutual interest between Mandela's supporters and non-supporters. I didn't think that was unique and interesting, but also more captivating. I especially love how the parts of the stories are said through symbolism, which adds a lot of emotion and deep meaning.

That is an awesome comment Nicole. You beautifully put what I was trying to say on paper. I agree. There was lots of emotion and so much symbolism. While I was watching it I couldn't think of any symbols but now I think about it I think that the Rugby Team symboled Hope. And it was there the whole time.

I think that the way so far the movie is set out is perfect. In a way I think the movie is about both the rugby captain and "Nelson Mandala". The reason why I assert or convey this is that one it is the evolution of Mandalas time but as well how Mandala helped out this team to win their first game, to show them something.

With the part when the team went to that school of non wealthy kids I found it touching because they helped out those kids and the kids helped them. They showed the team that they are very upbeat with life, whilst this team was complain. This team had so much more then these kids that they were complaining. I just found that troubling. As well these kids taught them a lesson that they can do anything

The movie, Invictus, showed the life of Nelson Mandela and what he did to the world. When Mandela was giving the speeches or even just talking, he had inspiration. Ever word that came out of his mouth had a true meaning or meant something to others. Mandela is a great role model and people should be happy that he was alive. Another action that Mandela taught us was the act of forgiveness. He forgave the whites when he came out of jail instead of getting revenge. If I were him I would have wanted revenge, but now you see his point of view and you understand the way he thinks. Moreover, Nelson Mandela was great man, and I bet many people didn't want him to go.

Mandela was also like a symbol for freedom and people looked up to him. He was the first one to stand up for what he believed and at first a lot of people didn't follow. He didn't care, he just went with what he believed.

examples Blake?

Any parallels to other historical fights for freedom/equality? What is different? What is the same?

How is the membean practice going?

During that movie I had many questions like
- why was rugby so important to the south africans
- why was the south african team full of whites and whites who cheered and supported the team
-why were the bodyguards white, I thought all whites were totally against Nelson Mandela.
- I thought all whites were totally against Nelson Mandela, so why were they greeting him politely during the rugby game and acting like it is an honor.
Overall the movie is really nice and fun to watch, if anyone knows the answers to the questions please tell me as I am quiet confused.

Thanks

There is a lot of symbolism that Mandela says in the movie. He says things that are very inspirational.

Riya,
I think that the rugby symbolized Hope.

Riya, the Body guards where white because Nelson Mandala wants to put an end to the so called war between the whites and african Americans. He wants to show the world that any one can protect hime

That is a very clear and easy way of putting it Jessie. I was wondering the same thing but I thought I partially knew when I didn't

I love how the people that made the movie showed how like a rift separated the backs and the whites. They perfectly showed this when at the beginning of the movie the road separated the rugby team and the other kids playing soccer on the field with all the dead grass.

I think it's really inspirational how Mandela was in that prison cell for 27 years, but never gave up, and kept persevering to reach his goal.

When the movie first started I thought this was going to be a bland and lifeless historical movie, but as it continued I liked that the film was able to tie a truly historic event to something I could identify with, such as competing in sports events.

Nelson Mandela understood that sports could change people's hearts and minds. In fact, he once famously said, "Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers."

The world has lost a great leader and mentor.

I really liked the movie on hoe it connected to the rugby game. I like that because insted of foucising so much about the governmet it focuses on the other things.
