Claim = An arguable opinion about a text
e.g. In the opening scene of the short story, Thank you Ma’am by Langston Hughes the author teaches readers that when faced with desperate situations, people will often do whatever it takes to survive
H/W - Read for 25 mins. Spend 5-10mins collecting images/quotes for your Reader's Notebook cover page. All your photos must be collected by FRIDAY's class.

Todays lesson was very interesting. I liked learning about claims.
Today's lesson was incredibly helpful because it showed my the structure in writing claims, and how you need to have an arguing statement, where people could disagree, in your claim. You must also have a symbolic reference to even push your thinking further. Also, we must not use words like never give up as the claim, it has to be something stronger, something with more meaning. The summative project was a cherry on top of the lesson, because even though it can be stressful (because it's a summative), it is going to be super fun! Thanks for the lesson!
I really enjoyed today's lesson because I figured about what my story that I am currently reading is actually trying to tell the readers. This helped a lot because I have almost finished the book and I didn't even think about this, but now that I do I see that the book is on a whole new entire level and I am able to understand and enjoy the book more than I really was. Thank you Mr Buxton for today's lesson and thank you to my classmates who shared their ideas out loud for everyone to listen to, which gave me more ideas and more examples to clarify what we learnt about today- claims and themes.

Today's lesson was really useful because it helped me understand the structure of writing claims, and how you can push your thinking deeper by using a symbolic reference . I also learned to not use cliches and single words as my claim, I HAVE to go deeper. Also, the notebook decorations was a great choice for a summative because it really fun! Thank you!
Thank you Mr Buxton for the help you gave me during the lesson today and I have learn how the authors try to express themselves from another perspective.Now that I know how to think deeper and understand the story better,i no longer use singe words to recommend the books i have read. I'm looking forward to our lesson tomorrow!!! :)
Today was very helpful because I didn't only learn how to write a normal claim, but I learned how to right a powerful claim that is not cliche and is a peice of thinking outside the box. Also I think the notebooks are a great way to start a summitive not just because we can decorate it, but because if we work hard, our readers book could possibly have a meaning. Thanks Mr.B for the awesome lesson!
